Elizabeth Young, 27, was born in Scotland and later emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, United States.  Elizabeth was married to Charles Young, and they lived with James and Margaret Murray and their son Walter at 6853 South Green Street.  Both husbands were employed by the Chicago City Railways Company and did not sail with their wives on Lusitania’s last crossing.

Elizabeth was accompanying Margaret and Walter on Lusitania on a trip back to Scotland, where Margaret was also from, as Margaret had not seen her mother in 8 years.  All three were lost in the Lusitania sinking.

The Saturday, 8 May 1915, New York Times, names Margaret, Walter, and Elizabeth as being from Memphis, Tennessee, or who had, at least, had booked passage in Memphis, while mentioning that their husbands were employed by Chicago City Railways Company.

  1. Elizabeth Young (Lizzie Grossart) she is my Great Great Aunt on the Grossart side.She was born at Carmichael, South Lanarkshire and was going home to visit her mother in Lanark along with her friend Margaret Murray who also belonged
    Lanark. If any has more information I would be interested in hearing from you, also I might be able to help you with
    information.

    • I believe Elizabeth Grossart was my great great aunt as well. My grandmother, Marion Rowan (maiden name Grossart)was born in Carnwarth, Lanarkshire). Elizabeth Grossart was her fathers sister.

        I think there should be a story in the gazette this week about Lizzie and Margaret Murray and the Lusitania.

        • Yes, that would be great. I do not live in the UK. My immediate family did not know why Lizzie Grossart Young was coming back to Scotland. My grandmother often said that they wondered if something bad had happened and that was why she was on the ship

            Some more information for you.
            Your Grandmother and my Grandfather were cousins.

            Marion married Samuel Rowan (Coalminer) on 21st Oct. 1921.
            Marions father was James Grossart (Signalman on the Railway) her mother was Margaret Smith.
            Samuels father was Thomas Rown (Coalminer) her mother was Sarah Hepburn (Deceased at time
            of marriage)

            James was Elizabeths (Lizzies) brother.

            As far as I can discover there was no other reason for them coming home other than to see their families. Maybe start of war had something to do with it. We will never know.

            Mary I can trace OUR family back to our 6 x great grandfather.

    Sorry taken so long to reply but been having problems with computer. Going on holiday today to TENERIFE FOR 10 days to get some sun. See you live in Indiana , Just to let you know you have a relation lives in Calgary (my uncle Tommy Grossart). Again sorry for delay will talk again on return from holiday.
