Mr. Edwin Twining

Edwin Twining, 19, was a United States and British dual citizen traveling on Lusitania‘s last voyage.  Twining was lost in the disaster.

Twining was the son of Florence Larke, who was 50 at the time of the sinking.  Twining also had one sister, 13 at the time, and five brothers ranging from 16 to 26 years old.  Florence’s first husband, Thomas Twining, died July 4, 1907, and on July 6, 1908, she married Reverend Mr. Edmund Larke.  They lived in Chicago, and through Reverend Larke’s naturalization in 1909, Florence and her children, all of them minors, became American citizens.

From the time Edwin was 15, he earned money as a mechanician, specializing on racing cars.  He lived in New York with his eldest brother, James E. Twining, but was frequently absent to go to car races.  How much Edwin made from his work is unknown, but made contributions to support his mother and brother James.

James represented Edwin’s estate in the lawsuit against Germany, where the ruling determined that Germany would pay Florence Larke the sum of $5,000.00 for Edwin’s wrongful death.
