Mr. Edward Tarry

Edward Tarry, 27, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was returning to England on the Lusitania to make his annual report to the firm of Encorah and Sons of Liecester.  Tarry was the company’s Canadian representative.  Tarry originally came to Canada in 1913 to obtain a market for knitted goods for his company.  He had a wife and two children who resided in England.  In Canada he boarded at 11 Rainsford Rd.  During the Lusitania sinking, Tarry managed to get below to his stateroom to get lifebelts. Tarry was saved.

  1. He was my grandfather. My mother was Winnifred Tarry who married John Causier in Vancouver BC Canada. There was an article published in The Vancouver Sun -I believe in the 60’s-which told of his story. He ended up in the water with his lifejacket on which was only good for so long as it would become waterlogged and sink. He thought he was just about to go down when a young girl in a lifeboat reached over the side and grabbed his hand-thus saving him. This article states that they met again -I believe over 50 years later. He kept his lifejacket-which I have seen -and the daily bulletin-the last one. They were given to his eldest daughter Edna Tarry who married George Robinson in Vancouver-on the daughters passing, they were passed on to her son Richard Robinson. He unfortunately died at a young age of about 65 and remain in the possession of his wife Corrine Robinson in Vancouver. I assume she stills has them. My grandfather lived to see his 50th wedding anniversary in Vancouver where they settled. He and his wife Claire Harvey of Leicester had 3 children Edna Tarry, Jack Tarry-who followed in the business, and my mother born in 1916-Winnifred. I am wondering if anyone can tell me his cabin number as I have a map of the ship with all the cabins illustrated.

    • David, this is so interesting. My uncle asked me to check if Edward Tarry was on the passenger list as he has a dollar bill that has something written on to the effect that it was in Edward’s possession on the ship. My Grandmother , Gladys Cundy ( nee Mansfield) was Clara Tarry’s cousin. In 1989 we went to Vancouver and spent some time with Edna and George and met Richard. I didn’t know anything about the Lusitania story, but thanks for the extra info. The family are really interested.
Best wishes, Sarah Thompson ( probably about your 3rd cousin or something!)

    • Hello David
I am 2nd cousin once removed to Sarah Thompson above. My grandfather, Joseph Mansfield, was born in Leicestershire and started a music business in Worthing, Sussex. He visited Ted and Clara (his cousin) on a couple of occasions in Vancouver in the 1950s and wrote three letters to those at home during his stay.
I live in Vancouver Island. If you might be able to visit in December we should be pleased to welcome you.

  2. David: just going through the old photos and see a number of us from the fifties. If you are still in Vancouver area please call. David Dayton 604 504 0090
