William Winter, 28, was a British citizen. According to the Sunday, 9 May 1915 New York Times, during the Lusitania sinking, Winter entered lifeboat 17 which overturned and then swam to lifeboat 19.
How this story could have reached the New York Times is puzzling, as Winter is listed as a Lusitania victim. Either the New York Times erred in the identification of the storyteller, or the list is in error and Winter survived the sinking.
