John Edward Hughes (1878 – 1915), 37, was a hospital attendant on board the Lusitania‘s last voyage. Hughes was lost in the Lusitania sinking, and his body was either not found or not recovered. This biography was made possible by Peter Kelly and a collaboration with the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
Biography
Hughes was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1878, the son of Rowland and Eleanor Hughes. He was married to Lily Hughes, (née Bentley) in 1904, and in 1915 they lived at the family home, 305 Liverpool Road, Birkdale, Lancashire, England.
He served as Hospital Attendant in the Engineering Department on board the Lusitania, having signed on at Liverpool on 13 April 1915 for what would be her final voyage to America. His daily rate of pay was £00.04s.03d.(21p).
He was killed when the Cunarder was sunk, aged 37 years.

The Liverpool and London War Risks Insurance Association Limited granted a yearly pension to Lily Hughes to compensate her for the loss of her husband which amounted to £21-9s-5d. (£21.47p.) which was payable at the rate of £1-15s-10d. (£1.79p.) per month.
