  1. My grandmother’s cousin John Roberts (Assistant Engineers’ Mess Steward) died on the Lusitania. My grandmother gave me a memorial card with his name on it and a picture of the ship. Can I send you a copy to display? Also how do I find who his parents were and from what part of England he was from and any other info on John.

    Regards,

    Doris

    • Hi Doris,

I apologize that it took me so long to reply. Yes, I would be interested in a copy of the memorial card and any additional information that you may have on your grandmother’s cousin. If possible, I’d like to have at least a short biography for him. You can email the picture to me through the “Contact” page.

    • Hi Doris. I’ve been researching a John Roberts now for the past week and came across this website.

My grandmother Joyce Riley (nee Roberts), spoke to me about a John Roberts who died on the Lusitania. John was her uncle, brother to her father Arthur Roberts, whos mother and father were called John and Margaret. Me, my grandmother and all of her family are from Liverpool.

The story she told me about John was that he had sailed to New York to seek treatment for appendicitis. He had an operation there and sailed back on the Lusitania. On board the ship he was incapacitated for most of the journey, however towards the end of the journey he was able to explore some of the ship. He was with a friend (name unknown) who accompanied him to New York and he survived. When the ship was hit, John and his friend managed to jump into the water, however, from what Johns friend stated to my grandmothers family, on hitting the water his appendix burst and he fell unconcious. His friend was recovered from the water some time later, how and by who he was recovered is unknown by my grandmother.

John and Margaret, known to my Granmother as ‘Grumpa’ and ‘Nanna Roberts’, went to Ireland to try and recover his body on the beaches were some of them had been washed up, however sadly it was never found.

If you need any more information, or have any more information yourself that would be much appreciated. I’m very keen to put all the pieces of this story together and i’m so thrilled I found this lead through yourself.

Look forward to hearing from you with any more information,

      George William Lamb, Liverpool, England

      • Dear George,

John Roberts did work aboard the Lusitania. He was part of the Victualling Crew–Assistant Engineer’s Mess Stewart. I have a little memorial card from the ship with his name on it from my grandmother. My grandmother told me he was part of the crew. Do you think this is the same fellow?

        Regards,

        Doris

      • Hi George,

Yes Cliff, on this site, just notified me John and Margaret were John Roberts parents. But did you know he was a part of the crew? Why would his body end up in France? My grandmother came to Canada in 1923 and she always told us about her 19 year old cousin who was a steward on the Lusitania and died on the ship

        Regards,

        Doris

        • Hi Doris.

Apologies for the delay in responding, i’m currently at Liverpool University and approaching exam time so revision has been number one priority.

After speaking to my grandmother she has confirmed he was part of the crew. It seemed we got a little lost in translation. I can also confirm he did recieve treatment for appendicitis and he was incapacitated on the journey home. It is possible his friend was also part of the crew. She has confirmed he was born and raised in West Derby in Liverpool.

My grandmother, now 78, is John’s niece. Her grandparents went to France to try and recover the body as some bodies were being washed up on beaches there, however, it was never recovered.

What is your relationship to John ? Your parents and granparents names ?

          It’s all very interesting !

          Kindest Regards,

          George

          • Hi George,

Sorry for the late reply. My grandfather was Edward Court born in Birkenhead, his mother was Elizabeth Ann Roberts. Elizabeth had a brother John Roberts who married Margaret Davison. Their son John was my third cousin who perished aboard the Lusitania. I wonder if your grandmother ever heard of my mother Doris Court born in Birkenhead, her parents were Edward Court and Maria (Crowder) Court. Does your grandmother have any pictures of her grandparents or Arthur you could share with me? I only have a photo of Elizabeth Ann Roberts, John Roberts aunt, my great grandmother.

            Regards Doris

  2. Hi Doris

the only information I have is listed below:

Son of John and Margaret Roberts, of 19, Maitland St., Liverpool. Born at West Derby, Lancs. He was approx 18 years of age. His body was not recovered if I remember correctly. This information was taken from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

    regards

    Cliff
