Press release for the Marlow Lusitania commemoration on 7 May:

The sinking of the Cunard liner Lusitania on the afternoon of 7th May 1915 by a German submarine resulted in the death of 1,198 passengers and crew. The sinking was in breach of international law and caused worldwide outrage. This incident helped shift public opinion in the United States against Germany and influenced America’s eventual declaration of war a couple of years later.

Among the dead was the famous American theatre producer and impresario Charles Frohman, whose encouragement and support for J M Barrie’s play Peter Pan led to its immediate huge success in London and later round the world.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania and the death of Charles Frohman, a short service will be held at the Frohman Memorial on The Causeway in Marlow at 3PM on Thursday 7th May.

Prayers and poems will be read and a wreath laid on behalf of the town by our mayor to honour the memory of all those who died in this infamous and tragic act of war. All are invited including especially anyone who has lost a friend or loved one at sea or is just a fan of Peter Pan.

Biography updates

All deck crew biographies have been updated. You may notice that, unlike today’s ships, aboard Lusitania, Cunard listed their pursers as part of the deck department and not the victualling/stewards’ department.

Also completely redone is the biography for Martha King, second cabin passenger.

While putting up new biographies is the priority right now, I will make time to correct major errors.

Two weeks before the centennial to go! It’s coming fast!
