Alice Smethurst, 24, was a British national from New Philadelphia, Ohio, United States. She was traveling on Lusitania with her husband Harold. During the sinking, Harold put Alice in a lifeboat and, saying that women and children were to go first, Harold did not join her despite her protests. After Alice’s boat left, Harold put on a life belt, slipped into the water, and floated until a boat picked him up.
