Frederick John Milford, 36, was an American citizen from Hancock, Maryland, United States. He was saved from the Lusitania sinking. The New York Times of Monday, May 10, page 3, said: “E. J. Milford of Maryland was dragged into a lifeboat after swimming for fifty minutes.”
He was rescued by the Flying Fish. He returned to the United States aboard the American Liner Philadelphia with survivors Gladys Bilicke and Frederic Gauntlett.

This question is for Mike Poirier. My wife just finished reading the book “Dead Wake” by Erik Larson. It was a wonderful book and she learned so much about the Lusitania. She was stunned to learn that one of the passengers was from the same small town in Western Maryland that her Dad was from, Hancock, Maryland. The survivor’s name was Frederick John Milford aged 36. He was saved by the lifeboat Flying Fish and was dragged into the boat after swimming for about 50 minutes. He returned to America aboard the American liner “Phladelphia” with survivors Gladys Bilicke and Frederick Gauntlett. Do you have any more information on this individual?
Milford was from Hancock, Michigan, and was a immigrant from Cornwall, England, and worked as an insurance agent in Hancock. Died there in 1927. Note the Claims Commission report. The NYT notice is wrong as to state.
